NPLI at UNCBD COP17, Armenia
The Nature Positive Landscapes Initiative team, Ray Victurine, Director of Engagement and Implementation and Jennifer McGowan, Director of Science and Landscape Planning, will be at UNCBD COP17 in Armenia taking part in a wide variety of open and closed door events.
What does "Taking Action for Nature" look like in practice for the private sector?
When: 22 October, 10:30am - 11:45am
Where: IUCN PavilionForum A, IUCN Pavilion, Blue Zone
Dr Jen McGowan will join a session hosted by the IUCN which takes stock of progress on the IUCN Rapid High-Integrity Nature-positive Outcomes (RHINO) approach, showing how companies are turning nature commitments into credible, on-the-ground action plans, and highlighting how the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT) supports this process. The session will show how organisations apply IUCN RHINO and use the Species Threat Abatement and Restoration (STAR) metric — a species extinction risk metric that feeds into the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures' (TNFD) State of Nature metrics — to prioritize threats, design operational and landscape-level action plans in consultation with stakeholders, and set science-based targets to reduce species extinction risk. Speakers will share how STAR is used in practice to set credible species targets in diverse projects, discuss the challenges of embedding landscape approaches into implementation, and offer reflections on reporting progress consistent with the GBF monitoring framework.
Putting Target 1 into Practice: Interactive Marketplace of Spatial Tools and Platforms for Landscape Planning
When: 23 October
Where: Data to Action Pavilion
More information to follow
Beyond the business as usual: Landscape-scale change for a nature positive future
When: Sunday 25 October 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Where: Main Room, Nature Positive Pavilion
Join the Ray Victurine and Jennifer McGowan at the Nature Positive Pavilion for an NPLI hosted event. Hear the latest programme updates and science initiatives, then learn from mining sector leaders and international experts about driving nature positive outcomes worldwide.
This session provides an overview of the Nature Positive Landscapes Initiative’s progress, featuring key announcements on new science initiatives and the launch of our Community of Practice.
The panel that follows turns to real-world application, spotlighting the Initiative’s work with the mining sector. Experts from private companies and international organizations engaged with industry will discuss how businesses are addressing nature risk and investing in programs that deliver nature positive outcomes across multiple countries.
Panelists including Heather De-Quincey, Biodiversity Principal, Anglo American; Martin Sneary, Director, Business and Nature, IUCN; Carly Vynne, Chief Program Officer, Director, Conservation Solutions Program, RESOLVE and Regeneration; Dr Laura Sonter, Director, Science and Policy, The Biodiversity Consultancy; and Hugo Costa, Director Business and Biodiversity Impact, Wildlife Conservation Society will also showcase industry initiatives underway to accelerate adoption of nature positive approaches at landscape scales — connecting on-the-ground activities and investments to broader systems change.
Building Nature Value at Mine Sites and Across Landscapes: Case Studies in Action
When: Sunday 25 October 8:45 am - 9:50 am
Where: Main Room, Nature Positive Initiative Pavilion
Mining companies, NGOs, and restoration partners share real-world examples of implementing Nature Positive commitments through biodiversity planning, landscape conservation, restoration, and innovative partnerships.
Mining companies have made substantial biodiversity and Nature Positive commitments, but implementation remains an evolving challenge and there are still relatively few examples from real-world mining contexts. The NPLI’s Dr Jen McGowan will join industry, NGOs, and restoration partners to explore emerging case studies and implementation efforts at a session hosted by RESOLVE and Regeneration Enterprises.
Drawing on examples from Resolution Copper and other mining projects, panelists will discuss Net Biodiversity Gain strategies, landscape-scale conservation partnerships, restoration of legacy and abandoned mine sites, and innovative approaches such as mine waste repurposing. The session will share practical lessons and opportunities for collaboration to advance Nature Positive outcomes across the sector.
